THE USEFUL ANSWER
Wall and ceiling painting should be scoped separately. Ask how the painter will assess existing coatings, address minor defects, protect the room and treat stains before finishing. Active leaks, recurring movement or other underlying problems need assessment before paint is used to cover them.
01 / THE DETAILS
Preparation is part of the job.
Cleaning, filling, sanding and spot priming may all be needed, depending on the existing surface. Ask which repairs are included and whether full-wall preparation or only local patches are allowed for.
A freshly painted wall will not necessarily hide every old ripple or patch. Discuss the expected finish in the actual room, especially where light falls across the wall.
02 / THE DETAILS
Cracks and stains need a cause, not just a coat.
Tell the painter about stains, previous leaks and cracks that have reopened. Painting should follow any necessary building or moisture repairs. Do not assume a cosmetic filling allowance includes structural repairs.
For older or suspect coatings, ask for an appropriate assessment before sanding or stripping. Tell the painter about the age and known history of the property.
03 / THE DETAILS
Ceilings change the access and protection.
Height, ornate cornices, ceiling roses, stairwells and difficult access can change the equipment and time needed. Include these in photographs and arrange safe access for inspection.
Specify whether cornices, ceiling features and wall-to-ceiling edges are included. Agree how lights, curtains, flooring and furnishings will be protected.
04 / THE DETAILS
Ask what “two coats” actually means.
A coat count alone is not a full specification. The existing surface, primer, colour change and selected product all affect the system required. Ask the painter to explain the proposed preparation and finish rather than comparing only the coat count.
Questions to ask before you start.
Are ceilings, doors and skirting included?
Only if they are listed in the quote. A walls-only price can exclude ceilings, doors, door frames, skirting, windows and cupboards. List each surface and ask whether preparation, primer, materials and cleanup are included.
Should I choose the colour before asking for a quote?
You can request a scope before finalising the colour, but tell the painter about strong colour changes, feature walls and existing dark finishes. These can affect primer selection, coverage and the number of coats. Test a sample in the actual room before buying the full quantity.
