THE USEFUL ANSWER
Choose an interior finish by surface, room use and the selected product’s specification. Test colour samples on the actual wall in daylight and evening light. Record the product and sheen as well as the colour; the same colour can read differently across finishes.
01 / THE DETAILS
Look at the room throughout the day.
Compare samples beside the flooring, furnishings and trim you are keeping. View them on more than one wall if light changes across the room. Screens and printed cards cannot show exactly how a coating will look in your home.
Live with a sample before committing to a large area. Note the colour name and code so the quote and final schedule are clear.
02 / THE DETAILS
Match the finish to the surface.
Flat or low-sheen finishes are commonly considered for broad interior surfaces; trim often uses a different sheen. Product ranges vary, so compare the chosen manufacturer’s cleaning, durability and application guidance rather than assuming all finishes with the same name behave alike.
| Surface | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Ceilings | What finish suits the light and any existing imperfections? |
| Living and bedroom walls | How will the finish look under side lighting and everyday use? |
| Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry | Is the specific product appropriate for the conditions and ventilation? |
| Doors, frames and skirting | What preparation and handling period does this coating require? |
03 / THE DETAILS
Bring colour decisions into the scope.
Flag feature walls and changes from dark colours to light ones. Ask whether colour selection is included or separately arranged. Do not assume a general painting quote includes a designer’s consultation.
Confirm the final schedule before paint is ordered, including which face of each door and which side of a frame receives each colour.
Questions to ask before you start.
Should I choose the colour before asking for a quote?
You can request a scope before finalising the colour, but tell the painter about strong colour changes, feature walls and existing dark finishes. These can affect primer selection, coverage and the number of coats. Test a sample in the actual room before buying the full quantity.
