THE USEFUL ANSWER
For an interior trim quote, count the doors and specify whether both faces, edges, frames, architraves and skirting are included. Describe the existing finish and any sticking doors, chips or damaged timber. Confirm who handles hardware and whether doors will be painted in place.
01 / THE DETAILS
Count pieces, not just rooms.
A hallway can contain more woodwork than a large bedroom. Count doors, frames, windows and runs of skirting. Identify sliding, bifold, panelled or glazed doors separately.
Cupboards, shelving, stair balustrades and kitchen cabinetry should be separately discussed. They may need a different preparation and coating system and are not automatically part of a general interior repaint.
02 / THE DETAILS
The existing coating matters.
Tell the painter whether the current surface is painted, stained, varnished or unknown. Adhesion and compatibility need checking before a new finish is selected.
Ask how chips, dents, gaps and old hardware marks will be handled. Paint does not correct damaged joinery or a door that needs adjustment.
03 / THE DETAILS
Choose a finish you can live with.
Compare appearance, cleaning needs and how much surface detail the finish will show. A higher sheen can highlight preparation defects as well as architectural detail.
Agree on paint colour, product, sheen and the handling period after application. Dry-to-touch does not necessarily mean ready for normal wear. Follow the selected product’s instructions.
04 / THE DETAILS
Coordinate the final sequence.
Discuss when handles and fittings are removed, where doors can dry and how access will be maintained. Confirm whether the quote includes hardware refitting, touch-ups and cleanup.
Questions to ask before you start.
Are ceilings, doors and skirting included?
Only if they are listed in the quote. A walls-only price can exclude ceilings, doors, door frames, skirting, windows and cupboards. List each surface and ask whether preparation, primer, materials and cleanup are included.
